The Galway Cello (2020)
with Music for Galway, Kuros Torkzadeh

Based on a concept by Philip Fogarty and made by luthier Kuros Torkzadeh, the Galway Cello is constructed of woods sourced in Galway County and unites the elements of landscape and migration in response to the original central themes of Galway as a European Capital of Culture in 2020. A series of film shorts, The Making of the Galway Cello by Eamonn Dunne, documents the genesis of the instrument. The Galway Cello had its concert debut in 2021 as a centrepiece of Music for Galway's first Cellissimo festival, with Fragments, a piece specially composed by Bill Whelan for the instrument on its inauguration and played by Naomi Berrill.
